ICELAND IN SUMMER - THE LAND OF ICE & FIRE
Our tour to Iceland, the “Land of Ice and Fire” offers some of the most awesome scenery in Europe and is home to some very special birds. From the spectacle of superb seabird colonies, to the only realistic opportunity of seeing Barrow's Goldeneye in the Western Palearctic, and so much more in between!
Located in the North Atlantic there are some true Arctic species to be seen here such as King Eider, Harlequin Duck, Brünnich’s Guillemot, Gyrfalcon, and how about fantastic Red (Grey) Phalarope in breeding plumage? A fine supporting cast includes Great Northern Diver, Long-tailed Duck, Whooper Swan, Pink-footed Goose, Atlantic Puffin, Black Guillemot, Arctic & Great Skua, Red-necked Phalarope, Iceland & Glaucous Gulls, Snow Bunting and much more! On top of this we will have a couple of whale watching trips where possibilities include Harbour Porpoise, White-beaked Dolphin, Blue, Sperm, Fin, Sei, Minke & Humpback Whales and even Killer Whale. And there's also a chance of seeing an Arctic Fox somewhere in the tundra.
However, the overall experience of birding in the most sparsely populated country in Europe, amidst dramatic, vast expanses of open wilderness, tundra, lakes, mountains, volcanos, lava fields, and glaciers. With almost constant daylight the birds are active all day and there really is a huge abundance of birds here during the summer months. It's a true spectacle, particularly in terms of breeding seabirds, alcids, shorebirds and wildfowl, with many species providing very close views. It's a true birders paradise. Oh and don't forget your camera too!
