ESTONIA - EARLY SPRING TOUR 2027
Welcome to an unforgettable early spring birdwatching adventure in Estonia, a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts! As the crisp air of March awakens the Baltic wilderness, Estonia becomes a vibrant stage for millions of migratory birds returning to its pristine forests, wetlands, and coastal meadows. With expert guides, we’ll explore Estonia’s diverse habitats, from the bogs of Lahemaa National Park to the coastal cliffs of Saaremaa, immersing you in the sights and sounds of spring migration. Perfect for birders of all levels, this journey combines breathtaking wildlife, serene landscapes, and Estonia’s rich natural heritage for an unparalleled birdwatching experience. Join us to discover why Estonia is one of Europe’s premier birding destinations! This short early spring tour allows birders to combine seeing wintering Steller’s Eiders with breeding White-backed, Middle Spotted, Grey-headed, Three-toed and Black Woodpeckers, Ural, Tengmalm's, Eurasian Pygmy and Northern Hawk Owls, Spotted Nutcracker and hopefully Hazel Grouse in just one short holiday! This mid-march period suits us perfectly!
Arriving at Tallinn airport, we will head to northwest Estonia to look for Ural and Eurasian Pygmy Owls in the forests around Leidissoo Nature Reserve. Birding on Saaremaa island will allow us to see one of the most wanted sea ducks in Europe - Steller’s Eider. In early spring, the birds often flock in the harbors, where they are sometimes just 50-100 meters from us. Other sea ducks here include thousands of Long-tailed Ducks, good numbers of Velvet Scoters, and Greater Scaup. The last part of the trip takes us to the western taiga forests in Soomaa National Park and it’s a woodpecker heaven where it is possible to see all 7 species of Europe's woodpeckers, including the elusive Three-toed, Grey-headed, White-backed and Black. Soomaa is also a known hotspot for Capercaillies, while its smaller cousin, the elusive Hazel Grouse also breeds here. Besides birds, the early spring trip is often good for mammals and Moose are seen on most trips, while Eurasian Lynx activity is also at its peak, and with very good luck, we might see one while birding in the forests!
So let's go birding Baltic style!
